Closure of the Electric Shadows Bookshop
8 April 2015
You may have seen the announcements that after 27 years, the wonderful Electric Shadows Bookshop is to close. I find this very sad, as it closes a final link to the Electric Shadows Cinema that we ran for, ironically, 27 years as well, until its closure in 2006.
Anne Hutton has been with the Bookshop from near the beginning, as co-owner first with Karen Foley, and then with Katarina Pearson. They have been an amazing fount of knowledge about books and film, and have found many obscure DVDs for me. Their recommendations have always shaped a lot of my reading. My current enthusiasm for the books of Sulari Gentill has been triggered by Anne.
The Bookshop has always expressed high ideals through its work – of service both to shoppers and also to local writers, and to quality publications from any source. That it has survived so long is a tribute to the commitment of Anne and Katarina to these ideals. Major bookshop chains and the internet can compete on prices but never on the informed, quality service and care that ESB has provided.
I will miss it profoundly, and I am sure many of you will too.
