Robert Herbert

Robert Herbert, who died in 2017 aged 59, was a dedicated film curator and historian, as well as a gifted filmmaker. For 18 years he curated the unique program of film screenings at the Art Gallery of NSW – remarkably insisting on screening films in their original formats. He also documented the screenings with program notes and projected the films.
The son of parents who were cinema staff at the Arcadia in Nelson Bay, Robert studied Fine Art at the City Art Institute in Darlinghurst and formed a film production company, Arcadia Pictures, with fellow student, Sophie Jackson.

He graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 1991 and proceeded to direct and often write short films including FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE, HE AND SHE (1992), SQUARE ONE (1995) and the series, HOME MADE HISTORY (2003).

Robert also worked in the art department on several feature films, including THE SAPPHIRE ROOM (1997).
