In the summer of 2019–20, the Gospers Mountain fire in New South Wales changed the lives and landscapes of communities across the Hawkesbury region.
Dancing with the Devil brings together the voices of people from St Albans, Colo Heights, Bilpin and surrounding districts. Speaking with remarkable honesty, generosity and humour, they revisit the uncertainty of the fires, the emotional impact of what followed and the complex experience of finding a way forward.
Their courage lies not only in what they endured, but in their willingness to confront difficult memories and share them with others. Together, their stories offer a deeply human account of fear, connection, confusion, hope and the strength found within community.
Written and produced by Sarah Allely and Bill Code, the film combines intimate interviews with first-hand mobile phone footage from the NSW Rural Fire Service, powerful images by news photographer Nick Moir and an original score by Mike Tilbrook.
At once moving, thoughtful and unexpectedly warm, Dancing with the Devil invites us to listen to the people behind the events and to consider what their experiences can teach us as communities face an increasingly uncertain climate.
Dancing with the Devil was commissioned by Hawkesbury City Council with funding from the Australian Government through the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.
